Postmodern and Hyper Reality Free Essays
Modern Culture and Hybridization PAPER #1 3/18/2013 HUM310-09 Daniel Echeverria The world has drastically changed since the beginning of online dating and other social network sites. With the growing number of people getting connected in the network, the way older generations used to communicate with each other is slowly diminishing. Todayââ¬â¢s social networking sites have altered the way we communicate with each other, changed the ways that we evaluate one another, and the way we express ourselves. We will write a custom essay sample on Postmodern and Hyper Reality or any similar topic only for you Order Now Due to the vast amount of information that can be found on the internet, a person can know about anotherââ¬â¢s past, current social circle, and interests in a matter of minutes. This has completely changed the way our generation was taught to interact with each other. For so many people now-a-days it has also become part of their social identity. Characteristics and pictures may be exaggerated slightly or completely fabricated, with the intention of enhancing oneââ¬â¢s identity for outside observers. As more innovations in the cyber social network are developed, todayââ¬â¢s post-modern culture society is heading toward an hyper reality. According to ââ¬Å"Statistic Brainâ⬠a US statistics website, there are currently 50 million people single in the United States. 40 Million People have tried online dating.? The way we meet and interact with one another isnââ¬â¢t the same as was 30 years ago. Our generation was taught different on the subject of dating and ââ¬Å"Getting to knowâ⬠someone. What used to be the only way of building a relationship or dating is now changed with the amount of information that is on the internet. We have seen that in films, a man meets a woman, they have face-to-face interactions, they talk about themselves and who they are and what they want to become. 1. Statistic Brain ââ¬Å"Online Dating Statisticsâ⬠, online http://www. statisticbrain. com/online-dating-statistics (6/20/2012) Relationships started with getting to know someone unknown, communicating with that someone, and building a relationship out of the experiences with them. Due to the growth of online dating and other network sites, a person can be reviewed before they can present themselves. Websites like Facebook MySpace give the user a profile where they can give a description of who they are without directly telling anyone. Someone with a user profile in these websites can be looked up in within seconds just by typing in the other personââ¬â¢s name in a regular web search engine. The excitement of exploring the personââ¬â¢s personality quickly vanishes with a stroke of a button. What was once local pub, or local cafe, or night club as the only ideal destination for social networking has now become online dating websites and online social networks. Society has begun to adapt these dating methods by using the tools and information in the internet to evaluate one another prior to the actual dating. The traditional dating experience of discovery, surprise, and experience is slowly fading away. In Glenn Wardââ¬â¢s Teach Yourself series, Glenn talks about postmodernism and the changes we need to adapt to, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ society, culture and lifestyle are today significantly different from what they were 100, 50 or even 30 years ago â⬠¦. Old styles of analysis are no longer useful, and that new approaches and new vocabularies need to be created in order to understand the present. ? Due to the rapidly increasing information technology, and social network users, the 2. Ward, Glenn ââ¬Å"Teach Yourselfâ⬠(Teach Yourself, 1998) modern way to share and research anyoneââ¬â¢s personal information is through the web. It can be can be used in many different ways, negative and positive. Law enforcement has used these social web sites to investigate suspects and quickly have a better idea of who the person is. A users profile can quickly give brief information on where the user lives, interests, and social group. But it can also be used to leak viral information in seconds. A recent example was of a LAPD manhunt in February 2013. In early February 2013, a suspected criminal Christopher Dorner posted a manifesto exposing the violence of the LAPD in his Facebook profile. This information was instantly available to everyone to read and share before there was any attempt to destroy the manifesto. ? Another group that has adopted the social network sites as tools for evaluating individuals is employers. Now-a-days an employer can view an applicantââ¬â¢s profile to screen the individual. Or an employee can be affected by what he/she decides to put on their profile page. According to Oregonbuisness. com, a survey was conducted in Chicago in 2009, ââ¬Å"Forty-five percent of employers reported in a recent CareerBuilder survey that they use social networking sites to research job candidates, a big jump from 22 percent last year. Another 11 percent plan to start using social networking sites for screening. More than 2,600 hiring managers participated in the survey, which was completed in June 2009. â⬠? 3. Wikipedia, ââ¬Å"Christopher Dornerâ⬠online http://en. wikipedia. rg/wiki/Christopher_Dorner (2/13/2013) 4. Oregon Business Report, ââ¬Å"45% Employers use Facebook-Twitter to screen job candidatesâ⬠online http://oregonbusinessreport. com/2009/08/45-employers-use-facebook-twitter-to-screen-job-candidates (8/24/2009) In other cases employees are fired for pictures they have posted and blogs they have written on their user profiles while on their perso nal time. It can be amazing how society has embraced and trusted information technology now when merely a few decades ago the public was nervous of having the same technology invade their privacy. Kimberly N Rosenfeld mentions this in her article Terminator to Avatar: A Postmodern Shift, ââ¬Å"Cinematic representations of a society in shambles brought about by humankindââ¬â¢s losing control to its machines were popular with audiences in a period when the sociopolitical context fostered anxiety and technological mistrust. â⬠? Although social networks provide the tools to the users so that they can express themselves, a user could use the profile to portray themselves as someone they are not. Not too long ago, punk rockers in the UK showed the world their rebellion through appearance and politically themed lyrics. During the 1980ââ¬â¢s Iranian War, it was obligatory for young women to wear a veil at school. In Marjane Satrapiââ¬â¢s graphic novel ââ¬Å"Persepolisâ⬠a young Iranian school girl identifies herself as a rebel by the way she dresses and the way she communicates her views. She dresses in public with a denim jacket, with Michael Jackson Pins and Nike shoes. Her image is that of a modern punk which was not tolerated from women at the time.? As mentioned earlier in this essay, a userââ¬â¢s personality can be now easily identified by viewing the userââ¬â¢s profile. Pictures, blogs, personal statements, comments on others pages, can easily describe 5. Rosenfeld N, Kimberly (Terminator to Avatar: A Post Modern Shift, 2010) 6. Satrapi, Marjane ââ¬Å"Persopolisâ⬠(Random House Inc, 1969) who the user is. Society has adopted this form of self-expression and has become comfortable on showing their identity this way. The user has become so addicted to the world of online social networking that physical communication and real social networking is almost not preferred. Almost similar to a gamer feeling confident playing an online sport better than the actual sport itself. Rosenfeld also describes this while comparing the movie ââ¬Å"Avatarâ⬠to modern hyper reality. ââ¬Å"While inhabiting the body of their avatar, human drivers are able to manipulate the world around them, free from the constraints of their earthly life. Pandora is a place where interspecies communication and relationships are possible. It is also a place where a paraplegic war torn veteran can experience once again the sensations of his limbs and the joy of living. â⬠? In the ââ¬Å"Pandoraâ⬠of social networks, a person who has a nervous personality can feel fully comfortable communicating to another person without actually being in front of them. Again Rosenfield quotes director of ââ¬Å"Avatarâ⬠James Cameron on his experience of a submarine expedition to the Titanic, ââ¬Å"ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m operating it, but my mind is in the vehicle. I felt like I was physically present inside the shipwreck of Titanic. So, it was this absolutely remarkable experience. â⬠? As technology advances, we can expect to see more of these virtual realities develop. Itââ¬â¢s inevitable that we will be communicating with one another more and more through online networks than by person anymore. The line between reality and hyper reality will become 7. Rosenfeld N, Kimberly (Terminator to Avatar: A Post Modern Shif t, 2010) 8. Rosenfeld N, Kimberly (Terminator to Avatar: A Post Modern Shift, 2010) blurred for post-modern society as more people use online identities to interact. The way we used to express ourselves, from the way that we dress or the way that we talk, will be another fad lost in history. Technology will use a search engine to influence our decision on which person we want meet and communicate with. Profiles and ââ¬Å"Avatarsâ⬠will replace human personalities and online worlds will become to feel much easier to live in. Rosenfeld talks about how the movie Avatar is a prediction on how society is slowly changing their views and attitudes toward the ââ¬Å"real lifeâ⬠. ââ¬Å"We find in Pandora simulacra of a post humanist future. The utopian quality of this filmââ¬â¢s magical world has even resulted in an uncommon public reaction, post viewing depression, as several news sources have reported. Maybe the public is especially sensitive to the contrast between the filmââ¬â¢s hyper reality and the current reality of our depressed economy. When these viewers walk out of the theater, they are let down at returning to live in the actual world they must inhabitâ⬠. ? 9. Essay Paper For The Chocolate War Example For Students
Essay Paper For The Chocolate War The Chocolate WarThe Chocolate War is a book written by Robert Cormier. It is about a teenaged boy named Jerry and his life as an individual at an all boys catholic school called Trinity. Every year the school sells chocolates to raise money. Every student is meant to sell fifty boxes, and they all do, except for Jerry. Jerry was forced not to sell the chocolates for 10 days by the Vigils, a school gang. At first thats what he planned to do, but as the 10 days went on, Jerry started to feel control over his life and decided to continue not to sell. By doing so, Jerry disobeyed the Vigils and made them look like a bunch of fools. Jerry is a fourteen year old freshman at Trinity. He is 5?9 and 145 pounds. He plays football for the school team. His mother just recently died of cancer and he lives alone with his father. While dealing with his mothers death, Jerry felt that he had absolutely no power or control over his life, that is until he stood up to the Vigils by refusing to sell chocolates. Archie is a part of the Vigils. He plays the role of the assignor. For this job he has to select students and give them assignments. In this case, He assigned Jerry the duty of not selling chocolates for 10 days. Archie is a very powerful and manipulative person and he can turn someone against another in the blink of an eye; Just like when Jerry prolonged his assignment. In the following paragraphs, it will be showed how Archie turned Jerry from a hero, to an outcast and finally, to a victim. Jerry became a hero to all in Trinity. A hero by definition being a man or boy admired for his bravery, great deeds or noble qualities. In this case they looked up to him for his bravery to stand up to Brother Leon and refuse to sell the chocolates, something they all had wanted to do, but never had the guts. For example, in roll call on the first day of the chocolate sales Brother Leon went through each boys name and they were to answer yes or no. Yes meaning they would sell the chocolates and no meaning they wouldnt. Every single boy said yes, except for Jerry, he said no. Brother Leon didnt just let him be, he put pressure on him, tried to make him feel badly about not selling, tried to make him feel guilty. It didnt work though, Jerry stood his ground and stuck be his original answer, NO. At first Jerrys motif not to sell the chocolates was just the assignment given to him by the Vigils, but soon after, that changed. Jerry started to feel control over his life, he started to feel like an individual for once. He also had become recognized by the school as a rebel, and as a leader. For example, Jerry was on the bus and this person hes never talked to before sat down beside him and said, -?Hey, Renault, you got guts, know that ?Boy, you really let Leon that bastard have it. Beautiful.? People hed never talked to were looking up to him, he couldnt back down after ten days, nor did he want to, so he continued not to sell chocolates, even after his assignment was finished. Jerrys fame didnt last long after he disobeyed the Vigils, due to Archies ways, Jerry soon became an outcast. An Outcast by definition being a person or animal cast out from home and friends, friendless. When Jerry continued his refusal, he made a mockery of the Vigils, something no one else has ever done. He also unknowingly set the Vigils up for some trouble. The Vigils had made a deal with Brother Leon to support the chocolate sales, and with Jerry standing up for himself like that, things c ouldnt go on for the better. Other people were bound to follow in his footsteps and that wouldnt be a good thing. Archie had to come up with something quick, so he decided to take charge put Jerry on the spot. The Vigils somehow made chocolate selling the cool thing to do at school and that made Jerry look un-cool. The Vigils also started to sell chocolates and put the sales under other students names, until everyone had sold their fifty boxes except Jerry. The students stopped looking at Jerry as a hero, but more as a lazy guy who wouldnt do his part.. They started to get frustrated and mad at the fact that he wasnt doing his part to help the school. Teachers and students started to ignore Jerry. For example in class when a teacher would ask the class a question, Jerry would wave his hand like mad and the teacher would never call on him. The teacher wouldnt even look at him, just through him, as if he were a ghost. .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb , .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb .postImageUrl , .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb , .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb:hover , .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb:visited , .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb:active { border:0!important; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb:active , .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7a0d0ed2ab8293ffde9a0c0d9e7b52eb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Diary of A Teenage Girl. Becoming Me EssayAnother boy, Harold Darcy tried to put Jerry on the spot in class one day. For example, in class one day during roll call Darcy put up his hand, and when called upon said:-?Would you ask Jerry why he isnt selling the chocolates like everybody elseWhy do you want to know asked the teacherI figure its my right to know, the right of everybody to know.? He looked around the room for support. Someone called out, ?Right on!? Darcy said, ?Everybody is doing their part, why isnt RenaultWould you care to answer that, Renault Questioned the teacher. Jerry was left with all eyes on him, waiting for an answer. Soon enough the ignoring stopped and the brutality began, Jerry was no longer an outcast, he was now a victim. A victim by definition being a person or animal sacrificed, injured or destroyed. For instance, in football practice he would get tackled from behind when the play was over. When hed look around to see who had done it, there was no one to be seen. He suspected members from his own team were doing the hitting, but he wasnt sure. Also in the hallways, someone tried to push him down the stairs. Jerry was not only a victim of violence, he was also a victim of harassment. For example it was late at night, and the telephone rang. -Oh no he protested. Let me alone. The ringing continued, mocking him the way Janza had mocked him. Let it be, let it be, like the beetles sang. Still ringing. Jerry lifted himself from the bed, surprised at his mobility, and made his way to the living room phone. ?Hello.? Forcing strength into his voice. Silence. ?Im here.? He said, shouting the words. Silence again. Then the lewd chuckle. And the dial tone. Whenever hed be at home he would get disturbing prank phone calls like this one. Nothing was ever said, all there would be was laughter in the background, then the dial tone. Jerry got several of these phone calls through out the day and sometimes at night for quite a while. Jerry also became a victim of pure violence. He was lured into a trap by a boy from his school who was working for the Vigils, it turned out to be a raffle. This raffle wasnt just an ordinary raffle, it was an evil one. It was a fight controlled by crowd and what they had written on the raffle tickets. Anything goes, any type of punch. No blocking was allowed by the one getting hit, and the one who goes down or who forfeits first, loses. The crowd was wild, all they wanted to see was blood, Jerrys blood in particular. Jerry was definitely not the favored one in the ring, all raffle tickets seemed to be against Jerry. They punches flew, hitting Jerry who took it helplessly. Finally, a punch to the groin area was c alled, and Jerry blocked it, that is when Jerry took a beating. His opponent starting swinging and hitting Jerry, hard. -Horrified, The Goober counted the punches Janza was throwing at his helpless opponent. Fifteen, sixteen. He leaped to his feet. Stop it! Stop it! But nobody heard. His voice was lost in the thunder of screaming voices, voices calling for the kill?kill him, kill him. Goober watched helplessly as Jerry finally sank to the stage, bloody, opened mouth, sucking for air, eyes un-focused, flesh swollen. His body was poised for a moment like some wounded animal and then he collapsed like a hunk of meat cut loose from a butchers hook. And all the lights went out. The crowd then took off and Jerry had been left alone bleeding, suffering from possible internal injuries and a fractured jaw. He had definitely become a victim, he wondered if the cause was it worth it?As one may see from the details given above, standing up for oneself and being an individual isnt always an easy task. Turning from a hero to an outcast to a victim can happen in a blink of an eye or even faster as it did in Jerrys case. There are many obstacles that must be conquered to be an individual. In some cases the result will be satisfying, but in others, one may be left wondering if it was worth it. In the future one should be prepared for the consequences that may arise by standing up for oneself and take in to consideration the sacrifices that one must make. One should also decide if these sacrifices are worth it. BibliographyThe Chocolate War

Literary Analysis Never Marry a Mexican Professor Ramos Blog
Literary Analysis Never Marry a Mexican Sandra Cisneros ââ¬Å"Never Marry a Mexicanâ⬠introduces readers to Clemencia. Cisneros eludes Clemencia as a woman who appears proud of her Mexican heritage, yet knows not how the slanderous phrase ââ¬Å"Never marry a Mexicanâ⬠uttered from her well-meaning motherââ¬â¢s trusty lips about Clemenciaââ¬â¢s own Mexican father negatively foreshadows her seedy life and gloomy world perspective later down her destructive journey of adulthood. Simply put, Clemenciaââ¬â¢s relationship with her mother is like she never had one (Cisneros 131) especially during the final moments of her sickly fathers life. When Clemencias mom meets a white man during her fathers hospitalization, Clemencias mom instantaneously begins dating him. Why not? Owen Lambert is definitely not Mexican. Clemencias mother seems to be in her own world as she completely disregards her life with her former husband and their children. This does not bode well for Clemencia as she holds a lot of resentment towards her mother, that will likely never resolve due to the fact that Clemencias mom is not around in the world anymore. Even though her mother may not be in this world anymore, Clemencia will always wonder why her mom did marry her father. On the other hand, Cisneros depicts Clemencia to be a bit of a ââ¬Å"daddys girl, so the degrading way her mother talks about him as if Clemencias father is ââ¬Å"nothing but a showoff(Cisneros 128) irks Clemencia immensely. Clemencia sees her father not as a showoff, but just like his things: calidad. Qualityâ⬠(Cisneros 129). Clemencias father was not born in the US, so her own father views US Mexicans to be not on par with the Mexicans who originate from Mexico. In her fatherââ¬â¢s opinion Mexican girls who didnt know enough to set a separate plate for each course at dinner, nor how to fold cloth napkins, nor how to set the silverwareâ⬠(Cisneros 127) are ridiculous. Clemencia knows not how to do these things. When Cisneros begins to describe Clemencias intimate life, Clemencia appears to be a femme fatale through the eyes of others. She has numerous affairs with married men but will never marry herself as Clemencia claims shes too romanticâ⬠(Cisneros 127). Why is that? Does she not consider herself being able to love or have someone love her? Clemencia thinks of herself as ââ¬Å"amphibious,â⬠a person who ââ¬Å"doesnââ¬â¢t belong to any class.â⬠When she was young, she moved away from home and lived with Ximena, whose husband recently left her. At this point, Clemencia coveted the idea of becoming an artist, hoping to be like Frida Kahlo. But she and Ximena lived in a dangerous neighborhood, where gunshots rang out all night long. This reminded Clemencia of her childhood since the two girls grew up in an even worse neighborhood. Once their father died, their mother married a white man despite their protests, justifying her decision by pointing out that she married so young that she never got the chance to be young, ââ¬Å"your father,â⬠she said, ââ¬Å"he was so much older than me.â⬠Clemencia holds this against her mother so much that she has disowned the old woman entirely. The anger Clemencia feels toward her mother has to do with the idea that her mother is disloyal to her father. In her eyes, not only has her mother betrayed her fatherââ¬â¢s love, but sheââ¬â¢s also betrayed her cultural identity by marrying a white man, of course, this is in keeping with her motherââ¬â¢s belief that no woman should never marry a Mexican man. And while Clemencia seems sometimes to agree with this sentiment, she still appears to want her mother to respect her fatherââ¬â¢s legacy. As such, she condemns marriage in general, turning away from it in her own life in favor of independence. Clemencia addresses a man named Drew in her narrative, asking him if he remembers speaking Spanish to her as they make love. When Clemencia and Drew lie together, she writes, her skin is dark against his, and he calls this beautiful. He whispers Spanish into her ear while ââ¬Å"yanking her head back by the braid.â⬠Despite these intense moments, though, every morning he leaves before the sun rises. Still, Clemencia admits that she likes when he speaks to her in her own language; ââ¬Å"I can love myself and think myself worth loving,â⬠she says. When Clemencia says she can conceptualize herself as ââ¬Å"worth lovingâ⬠when Drew talks to her in Spanish during intercourse, it becomes clear that her notions of self-worth and love are entangled in a broader consideration of cultural identity. This makes sense, considering how much attention she pays to her motherââ¬â¢s ideas about how romance and cultural identity interact with one another. For her, then, love is a complicated mix of identity and passion. Clemencia asks Drew if his son knows the role she played in his birth. Pushing on, she insists that she was the one who convinced Drew to have the baby when his wife was pregnant, he was unsure whether or not it was a good idea to have a child, but Clemencia convinced him to not suggest that his wife get an abortion. When it finally came time for his son to enter the world, Drew wasnââ¬â¢t next to his wife in the hospital room; while she was in the throes of labor, he was having sex with Clemencia in the very same bed in which his son was conceived. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re nothing without me,â⬠Clemencia tells him now. ââ¬Å"I created you from spit and red dust. And I can snuff you between my finger and thumb if I want to.â⬠Critics praise Cisneross ability to explore conflicts directly related to her upbringing, including divided loyalties, feelings of alienation, and degradation resulting from poverty. Although she addresses important contemporary issues associated with minority status throughout her two collections, critics have described her characters as idiosyncratic, accessible individuals capable of generating compassion on a universal level. Commentators laud her lyrical narratives, vivid dialogue, and powerful descriptions, applauding her poetic depictions of life as a Chicana woman, as well as her deft treatment of such controversial themes as sexism, racism, and poverty.
