Universities Can Best Be Viewed As Corporations - 894 Words

Universities can best be viewed as corporations. Corporations are simply businesses. The only reason for a business to exist is to make a profit. In order to make a profit, universities sell a variety of degrees to students. Students desire a degree because they â€Å"want the credentials that will help them get ahead† (Edmundson). In some cases, students â€Å"want that certificate that will give them access to Wall Street, or entrance into law or medical or business school† (Edmundson). The students’ desire for power, money, and success drive them to attend college. The students have an abundance of universities to choose from. In order for the universities to earn money, they must use techniques to attract students. This can be accomplished in a few ways. Advertising is one approach that allows the universities to manipulate students into believing their school is the best. Eastern Michigan University has achieved these manipulation techniques in their ad. The ad has three main features. On the left side, there is a picture of a young female smiling. This picture of the young female covers half of the ad. The left side features three text boxes. The first text box is dark green with white text and covers three-fourths of the second half. The text includes information about degrees offered, student to professor ratio, student organizations, percentage of students who find a job after graduation, and a website and phone number to contact Eastern Michigan University.
